Corporate Volunteers in Brower Park

On Thursday, October 20, 2016 community service volunteers from BNP Paribis, rebuilt a sloped plant bed. Liriope mascara and Liriope muscari ‘Variegata’ (lilyturf) were planted after the soil was aerated and nourished with Brower Park’s very own leaf-mold. We then covered the soil with mulch in order to retain moisture and prevent erosion. Ajuga reptant (bugleweed) was moved from the northern perimeter of the bed, to a circular area surrounding the Maple tree. Purple flowers will bloom in the spring and in the fall. Discarded grass sod tiles were sliced into long pieces and used to build a border around the northern part of the garden bed to prevent water runoff and provide a boundary clue of the garden bed area.

We even had time to water the new plants. Thank you for making this planting project a success and donating tools and plants to Friends of Brower Park and park staff. And thank you to the NYC Parks Department, Partnership for Parks, and the NYC Gardeners for their help and resources.

On Friday, October 21, 2016, volunteers from the Central Park Conservancy came out to plant bulbs in the same plant bed. Unfortunately, we were rained out. Fortunately, the growing lawn and new plants had a great watering. The group did try to assemble a Wheelbarrow but discovered parts were missing. They will return on November 4, 2016 to help winterize beds using leaf mold and mulch.

On November 4, 2016 Central Park Conservancy Volunteers came to Brower Park to help turn our leaf mold. Finishing a bit early they planted the last 50 bulbs into the native flower sloped garden.
